Following the plenary session of the FIEC Conference 2025, three focused workshops tackled key water-related challenges. Each workshop was moderated by an industry expert along with an academic from NTUA with the aim of proposing key solutions. 🔹 Workshop 1: “Strategies for Managing Excess Water”
Chair: Grete Aspelund, FIEC Vice-President for Environmental Affairs
Academic: Mr. Anastasios Stamou
Topics included the complex knock-on effects of flood mitigation, rising sea levels, and funding challenges. Solutions emphasized digitalisation, nature-based approaches, stormwater system upgrades, and collaboration across sectors.
🔹 Workshop 2: “Drought-Resilient Design: Building for Water Scarcity”
Chair: Mauro Grassi, Director, EWA Foundation
Academic: Dr. Simos Malamis
The discussion highlighted the lack of water-saving standards and awareness on construction sites. Proposed solutions included a “One Water” approach, innovative materials, improved infrastructure, and green procurement.
🔹 Workshop 3: “Risk Mitigation and Permitting”
Chair: Jean-Pierre Paseri, FIEC First Vice-President for Technical Affairs
Academic: Mr. Christos Makropoulos
This session addressed ageing water grids, leakage, and insufficient maintenance. Key proposals included digitalising the grid, smart metering, and advocating for a dedicated EU Water Fund in the next MFF.

These workshops highlighted the construction sector’s vital role in shaping Europe’s water resilience strategy, with the closing remarks delivered by FIEC’s President, offering a thoughtful summary of the conference along with an inspiring forward-looking message.
