The digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises in the construction sector depends on more than access to new technologies. It is also shaped by how businesses are organised and operate, established ways of thinking, resistance to change, and the workforce’s openness to innovation.
SMEs form a vital part of the construction sector, yet they often face constraints related to time management, human and financial resources, and access to digital expertise. Their digitalisation therefore requires not only suitable tools and technological solutions, but also a working environment that encourages learning, collaboration, and adaptability.
The importance of these factors is also recognised at European level. In its State of the Digital Decade 2026 report, the European Commission notes that SMEs continue to face persistent barriers related to digital skills, access to data and infrastructure, and limited resources. These challenges make it more difficult for them to adopt and scale advanced digital solutions. Overcoming them requires not only investment in technology, but also targeted training and practical support that can help businesses strengthen their digital readiness and respond more effectively to technological change.
In this regard, the European ET4Digital – Empowering Trainers for Digital Innovation in the Construction Ecosystem project, in which PEDMEDE participates, seeks to address the organisational barriers and established mindsets that may slow down the digitalisation of SMEs. The training programme developed within the project is designed to strengthen trainers’ knowledge and skills, enabling them to support businesses more effectively in the adoption and meaningful use of digital technologies.
By strengthening trainers’ skills and competences, ET4Digital aims to contribute to the development of a more resilient, innovative and digitally ready construction ecosystem, in line with the European Union’s Digital Decade 2030 objectives.
