Silica dust in construction – successful workshop
On 21st January, FIEC and EFBWW organised a workshop on how to effectively reduce respirable crystalline silica dust in construction.
More than 100 participants from 20 countries attended this workshop – organised in the framework of an EU-funded project – which generated lively exchanges between the speakers and the audience.
The various presentations gave a very good overview of the complexity of the problem: EU legislative framework on occupational exposure limit values, measurements on construction sites, concrete cases from the tunnelling sector, latest technological developments from the manufacturers, etc.
It was also the opportunity to present the expected deliverables of the project and in particular a guide to best practice aimed at helping construction employers and workers to stick to the EU limit values.
The final outcomes of the project will be available next year.

Construction Blueprint project – mid-term report
The Construction Blueprint project (www.constructionblueprint.eu) started two years ago and will last for two more years.
Lately, FIEC has been busy reporting about its activities as a partner in this EU-funded project (Erasmus+) coordinated by the Fundacion Laboral de la Construccion (Spain).
The aim of the project is to develop and implement a new strategic and coordinated approach (“Blueprint”) to sectoral cooperation on skills, by enhancing the responsiveness of vocational education and training (VET) systems, at all levels, to the construction labour market needs. In short, it aims to identify existing and emerging skills needs (in the fields of energy efficiency, circular economy and digitalisation) in order to translate them into vocational curricula responding to those needs.
Together with EFBWW and EBC, FIEC is responsible for the sectoral strategic approach, via the moderation of a LinkedIn account (“Construction Blueprint Sectoral Skills Alliance”) and the support to national partners in organising endorsement events; and consulting experts from all relevant spheres (political, educational, economic, social and environmental).

Parliament calls for better maintenance of TEN-T network
On 20 January, the European Parliament adopted an own-initiative report drafted by MEP Jens Gieseke (EPP) in view of the revision of the trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Regulation. Thanks to regular exchanges with key MEPs, FIEC’s main requests were integrated in the report.
The European Parliament points out the importance of regular and standardised maintenance of the TEN-T infrastructure and calls on the Commission to introduce a clear benchmark for quality requirements for infrastructure. Also, the MEPs call on the Commission to ensure the application of the principle of reciprocity concerning public procurement of TEN-T infrastructure.
