Europe is a «love affair»

On 22nd October, President Juncker gave quite an emotional speech at the plenary meeting of the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, to review the main achievements of his mandate (2014-2019).
He touched upon, amongst others things, economy and growth, the European pillar of social rights, the refugee crisis and the status of the European Union in a globalised World.

European Court of Auditors’ 2020 work programme

 

On 30 October 2019 the European Court of Auditors (ECA) published its work programme for 2020. The Court’s audits contribute to evidence-based policy making and to the transparency of the EU’s expenditure.
The 2020 work programme contains several topics of high importance for the construction sector. Amongst others, the ECA will assess the Commission’s actions to ensure a timely completion of the TEN-T core network. Similarly, the Commission’s management of major transport infrastructure projects will be under scrutiny.
Furthermore, the ECA will look on the progress made as regards the Capital Markets Union. More precisely, audits will address the objective of ensuring easier access for SMEs to private financing. The Auditors will also check the effectiveness of the EU’s actions in promoting and regulating sustainable finance.

Fire Safety in Buildings: Conference 19 November

A conference will be held in Brussels on Tuesday 19 November, to consider a holistic approach to the regulation of fire safety in buildings. Coming less than a couple of weeks after the release of the report into the Grenfell Tower disaster, the event will gather together a wide group of stakeholders. Amongst other issues, the conference will consider how best to include this holistic approach in national building codes. Speakers include MEP Sean Kelly and the European Commission DG GROW Head of Unit for Clean Technologies and Products, Fulvia Raffaelli.  FIEC will be represented in a panel discussion by Eric Winnepenninckx, the rapporteur for the sub-commission on regulation and standardisation, TEC-1.  More information, including the registration link, can be found below.
