FIEC at OECD roundtable on \u201cBuilding without Barriers\u201d<\/h3>\n

On 14 April, FIEC Vice-President and Chair of the Housing Working Group, Jo\u00ebl Schons (LU), participated as a speaker in the OECD roundtable \u201cBuilding without Barriers<\/em>\u201d, held in Paris. The event took place as part of the OECD\u00a0Regulatory Policy Committee\u00a0<\/em>meeting and the \u201cSimplifying for Success<\/em>\u00a0(S4S)\u201d initiative, which promotes smarter, more streamlined regulatory frameworks to unlock economic growth.<\/p>\n

During the discussion, VP Schons provided valuable insights into the challenges facing the construction industry, particularly in the housing context. Key points highlighted included the urgent need to accelerate permitting procedures, improve regulatory enforcement, and ensure better alignment of regulations across jurisdictions. \u201cThat the construction industry faces numerous regulatory burdens is a fact<\/em>” – said VP Schons –\u00a0<\/em>“but any simplification process starts with the way a project enters the system: through fully digitalised and automated permitting procedure. This allows abolishing the usual sequential treatment of applications and the fragmentation\u00a0of the decision-making process<\/em>.\u201d – he remarked.<\/p>\n

FIEC\u2019s contribution helped frame the debate around practical solutions to reduce administrative barriers and support a more efficient and responsive construction ecosystem across Europe.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row margin_bottom=”50″ css=”.vc_custom_1568973883443{margin-bottom: 25px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_column_text css=””]\"\"[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”3\/4″][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

European Parliament adopts report on exposure to chemicals (CMRD6)<\/h3>\n

On 15 April, the\u00a0Employment and Social Affairs<\/em>\u00a0committee of the European Parliament adopted its position on the 6th revision of the\u00a0Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic substances Directive\u00a0<\/em>(CMRD6). This revision addresses new exposure limit values for several substances, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and welding fumes that are relevant for the construction industry.<\/p>\n

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) supported some elements from the European Commission’s proposal, but also introduced a new limit value for isoprene, present in sealants, waterproofing membranes, adhesives. They have also included an obligation for employers to provide personal protective equipment in case of residual exposure above the limit value and specific support for SMEs.<\/p>\n

The MEPs also adopted the decision to enter interinstitutional negotiations.
\nNext step: the negotiating mandate will be approved in plenary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Data Build” project kicked off<\/h3>\n
On 16 April in Rome (Italy), in its role of associated partner, FIEC took part in the kick-off meeting of the\u00a0Data Build<\/em>\u00a0project. With a duration of 2 years, this EU-funded initiative is set to strengthen data-driven policy making in the construction sector.<\/div>\n
Funded by the European Commission under the SOCPL programme and coordinated by FILLEA CGIL, the project brings together a wide range of partners, including social partners, paritarian institutions, and training organisations from five EU countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia.<\/div>\n

Together, the consortium will explore how data and digital tools can improve working conditions, skills development, and occupational safety and health across the construction sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
